Gold Mundus Vini Award for Vinsanto 2008

We are very proud to announce that the Vinsanto 2008 of Artemis Karamolegos’s Winery won the most important prize of the Mundus Vini International Wine Award 2018! The Grand Gold was awarded as it received an excellent score, impressing the jury. It is worth mentioning that it is the first Grand Gold awarded in a Greek wine since 2011. It's only the fourth big prize awarded in a Greek wine in the history of this international competition. 6,770 wines from various countries participated in this year's contest. Only 33 wines received Grand Gold award.
We are especially pleased as Santorini's Vinsanto takes the recognition that deserves into the international wine map. Our joy is twofold as the Aidani 2017, which is expected to be released in the next few days, won the Silver Award.

Mavrotragano 2016 is just released

Αrtemis Karamolegos's Mavrotragano 2016 is just released! After 14 months of maturation and 3 months of cellaring it's time to share this rare wine with you! Read about the wine at: www.artemiskaramolegos-winery.com/en/winery-santorini-wines-07.php

Our Oenologist, Lefteris Anagnostou, presented the Harvest bulletin for 2017. In brief:
"In a year of extremities the result is expected to be quite interesting! The grapes were characterized by unevenness in quality depending on the area: Several grapes dehydrated from the heat, with good hygienic condition but also with unevenness of ripening. The tanks are characterized by higher alcohol dynamics than in previous years, milder acidity compared to 2016, finesse and the distinctive "Santorini spirit".

Preparations for 2017 harvest

This year's harvest in Santorini is just around the corner! It is characterized by the high rainfall for the region during the winter and spring, reminding us of the winter of 2015. Low temperature and snowfall are phenomena rare for the island and have delayed the "Eye development" of the vines by about 2 weeks compared to last year. The lack of usual winds led to a smooth fruit setting, while the sporadic rainfall in May and June did not affect the health of the grapes. Plants are characterized by increased liveliness due to the aqueous stock. The performance is expected to be slightly lower than last year's levels. The harvest is estimated within the first 10 days of August and the season is expected to be very interesting for wine makers!

Pnoe White & Rose

Our Winery launched two brand new semi sparkling wines this month!
PNOE WHITE: The new semi sparkling Pnoe white from Artemis Karamolegos is a blend of indigenous to Santorini varieties, Assyrtiko, Athiri and Aidani with the Aegean varieties of Platani, Kritiko and Katsano. Pale gold colour with discreet aromas of citrus fruit, lemon blossom and candied yellow fruit like pear and apricot. Medium sweet on the palate yet well balanced due to the wine’s fresh underlying acidity. Enjoy it as an aperitif or pair it with summer fruit salads, biscuits or citrus flavoured cakes. Drink it at 6-8C.
PNOE ROSE: This is the brand new semi sparkling rose by Artemis Karamolegos blending the indigenous varieties of Mavrotragano, Madilaria, Mavrathiro and Voudomato. It shows a very fresh and sensual nose of raspberries and red cherries with notes of violets and roses. There is also a spicy touch. Round, well balanced on the palate with zesty acidity and long smooth finish. Enjoy it as an aperitif or try it with creamy cheeses, fruit salads, strawberries and cherries.

ANDREAS LARSSON SCORES OUR VINSANTO 92/100!

Best sommelier of the world in 2007, owner of the famous web site www.blindtasted.com, Andreas executed a blind taste on our Vinsanto. We scored 92/100! As he comments "... I would talk about a quite traditional Mediterranean style of sweet wine. Without begin too poetic, I think this is really what the great renounced sweet wines tasted like in the antique times. I like it a lot. Well-balanced complex and enjoyable to drink. Watch the video in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq3ITMw_zlM&feature=youtu.be
From the beginning, back in the 90’s when he was a young sommelier, Andreas Larsson was a firm believer in blind tasting as the only true way to taste wine. The absolute objectivity of blind tasting allows the taster to focus exclusively on his or her senses, without preconceptions about the wine clouding their judgement. Andreas focused mainly on that tasting approach when on his quest to become Best Sommelier of the World, a goal he reached in 2007; and he attributes his success largely to his dedication to blind tasting all levels of wine and spirits.

Santorini: Top wine destination for 2016

According to Conde Nast Traveller, Santorini is one of the 9 best wine destinations to visit during 2016! As the article points out: "Besides pristine waters and iconic blue-and-white houses, there’s another reason to visit this stunning Mediterranean island: the wine. Volcanic soils lend the local Assyrtiko whites a distinctive minerality that makes them especially great with grilled squid and octopus, whole baked fish, and other classic Greek island foods. “I love Assyrtiko,” says Thomas Pastuszak, wine director of The NoMad, NYC, “and Santorini is the perfect wine destination: a great combination of beautiful place and fantastic wines”.

Our wines all over Greece

Our winery in Exo Gonia, Santorini, will be open during Christmas and New Year's Eve, so you may buy our wines as a present for your friends and family. You may also buy our wines all over Greece in the super Markets A.B. Vasilopoulos, Veropoulos, Marinopoulos, Thanopoulos and in wine cellars in Athens, Thessaloniki, Volos, Mykonos, Paros.

The wine lawyers in Aroma Avlis

On October 3rd, the wine lawyers from the global community who attended the significant conference of the International Wine Law Association (AIDV) at the conference center P. Nomikos (2-4.10.2015) in Fira, Santorini, enjoyed a dinner at the Wine Tasting area of our Winery and our fragrant courtyard. They were joined by wine journalists and oenologists. The 2006 Vinsanto of Artemis Karamolegos, which recently received the Mundus Vini award, stole the show completing the fabulous dinner created by our chef, Christos Koskinas, and edited by Nikos Fotiadis, President of the Institute of Greek Dietary Culture & Gastronomy.
Among the diners was Mr. Theodoros Georgopoulos, Lawyer and Academic, holder of the chair of Wine Law at the University of Reims, Chairman of the Greek Wine Association.
The menu, accompanied by exquisite white and red wines, consisted of fresh salads, traditional kavourma, tomato balls, white eggplant with tomato paste and yogurt sauce, stew and delicious orange pie with mastic ice cream.

Μundus Vini Gold 2015 for our Vinsanto 2006

Over the four days of the 17th MUNDUS VINI Grand International Wine Award at the start of September an international jury of 150 experts awarded 33 "Grand Gold" medals, with a further 768 wines being awarded Gold medals and 858 winning Silver. Just over 4,300 wines from about 40 countries of origin had been entered for the summer tasting. Artemis Karamolegos Vinsanto won the Mundus Vini Gold 2015 in its category! www.meininger.de/en/wine/2006-vinsanto-santorini
Our 2006 Vinsanto combines low alcohol content (9.5% V) hence high residual sugar (258gr / lit), high concentration (raisined for 10 days) and maturation in French oak barrels (15% new-85% second and third use) for 72 months. Its composition consists of  85% selected assyrtiko and 15% aidani. An explosive Vinsanto with long ageing potential. Mark Squire (Alan Parker group) described it as follows giving it 94 points: "It's like going down a steep hill on a bike without brakes, and in the end you realize that you made it safe and sound".

New label for our Vinsanto 2006

Vinsanto is identical to the island of Santorini. The origin of its name (Vino di Santorini> VinoSanto> Vinsanto) and the varietal composition (Assyrtiko-aidani) are the products of the Santorinian Land, whose creator, the famous volcano, is still there breathing silently.
The indelible features of the region -volcano, vine and sunset –constituted the core of inspiration for the design of our new label. The black background is predominant. Predominant is the black of the lava, as well in the whole landscape of the island. In the center of the label, the solar disk dominates with the colors of the sunset. Finally, the three spirals refer to the unique way of wine pruning developed on Santorini, the famous “kouloura”. The microclimate of Santorini (volcanic subsoil, hot and dry climate, evening  hydration fogs) and the system of  wine pruning (kouloura ) which protects and revitalizes the vine, are those reflected in our new label decorating from now on the bottle of Vinsanto 2006.

You can really see the lava

Tara Q. Thomas, the famous international wine critic and editor for Wine & Spirits for over a decade, published this month an article about the Santorini Assyrtiko, including a critic about the Artemis Karamolegos 2014 Santorini Assyrtiko. Tara specializes in the wines of Greece, having lived and cooked in Athens, and also covers the wines of Southern France and Eastern Europe. “You can really see the lava”, was the impressive introduction to the presentation of Artemis Karamolegos 2014 Santorini Assyrtiko.
In the article she refers to Lazarakis’ comment on how “the wine starts out fresh and simple, then builds flavor slowly and steadily. There is nothing extreme about this wine; it simply ticks off the requirements of a Santorini: clarity, minerality, acidity, all in balance. It makes sense when you see that it is Karamolegos. Based in Exo Gonia, where most of the island's wine industry is centered, the family has grown grapes on Santorini since 1952. By 2004, when Artemis Karamolegos built a winery and began making wine, he was managing 62 acres of vineyards, much of which he owns".
The article concludes with Kouri’s phrase: “They know the vineyards. And we taste it in the glass. There is nothing stylized about it. It is classic Santorini”.

Vedema reaches its full potential in our Winery!

The harvest is completed and everyone is ... on their toes in our Winery! The grapes are received and selected and then the must is pressed and placed in tanks. During all the stages of the new year's wine production everybody is fully committed and work all day non-stop. A real joy for all of us, full of creativity and festive mood. The word "vedema" is Italian and stands for the harvest. In the old days the wine production was also crucial for the economy of the island, and each family produced its own wine to cover their needs, and later, to export it. Grapes were transported to kanaves (wineries) and depending on their color (white or black) were thrown in a different winepress. Pressing grapes was not an easy job. Whoever entered had to withstand must fumes and not get dizzy! Pressing started at night. They washed their feet thoroughly and they were lightly dressed. They tied a scarf to their heads and had a basil hanging from their ear for smelling it. There was a great celebration the day the pressing ended.

Welcome to our new yard!

Our new patio offers panoramic views of the beaches Monolithos-Avis as well as the island of Anafi! You can also admire the vineyards and fields of the estate with the seasonal vegetables and horticultural products -aubergines, zucchinis, Santorini cherry tomatoes, melons, watermelons- which are used as fresh raw materials in the restaurant menu. Happy, shady, welcoming, full of flowers, sofas in earthy colors and white tables, it is an oasis where you can enjoy the fine flavors of the Greek and Mediterranean cuisine of the restaurant, combined with the wines of the winery of Artemis Karamolegos.

Famous destination-famous wines! Harvest has begun

The winery Artemis Karamolegos provides new experiences through its wines!
Strolling through our different and unique vineyards, it is now clear that this year will be special, and obviously of an excellent class! The air is damp and cool, then dry and soothing, helping the fruit to "built" its unique aromas without that excess sweetness. A rare balance in the fruit which all locals know and understand. It has been four years since the strong winds of 2012 that destroyed the first vegetation and weakened the plants - only this year did everything came into harmonious balance. At such times the majesty of nature speaks for itself, virtually eliminating us. And we believe that all of you who are watching us can perceive what we feel. Our confidence that we are in tune with the messages of nature, and our need to have strict requirements for “captivating” wines.
